Srila Prabhupada passtimes-34-the perfect teacher

Srila Prabhupada's Air New Zealand flight landed at Auckland airport at 10pm. Although it was quite late, many devotees -- 12 from the temple and 50 from the North Shore -- were there to greet him.

Many of the North Shore devotees had maintained only loose connections with Krsna consciousness, and rarely visited the temple. For Prabhupada's arrival, however, many now presented themselves with shaved heads, tilaka and devotional clothing. Yasomatinandana, Auckland's temple president, started an exuberant kirtana. Prabhupada passed through customs quite quickly and emerged, looking radiant and in good health, smiling broadly at the energetic crowd of devotees. Rama dasa, Auckland's head pujari, carefully placed a garland of flowers around Srila Prabhupada's neck, applied yellow camphor-scented sandalwood paste to his forehead and touched his feet.

Prabhupada walked quickly to the waiting car. On the highway, the devotees' cars one by one overtook Prabhupada's hired limousine. They were determined to reach the temple first for another greeting.

Back at the temple -- the same two-storey house in the suburbs that Prabhupada had visited three years before -- devotees were completing last-minute cooking and cleaning jobs. The temple had recently undergone extensive refurbishment. Most of the devotees had not slept for the last three days. The exterior of the temple had been pressure steam-cleaned and fully repainted, the grounds landscaped and new trees and shrubs planted. Devotees had remodelled the altar, cleaned and refitted the kitchen, and built a new vyasasana. Prabhupada's quarters had undergone the most transformation -- from a cold, bleak concrete room to something very comfortable. The floors were now covered with varnished cork tiles and a warm rug. The walls were repainted in Prabhupada's favourite colours -- pale blue with gold trim.

Roy, a newly-arrived and energetic young man, had built a small table for Prabhupada to take his prasadam on, and had assisted in installing a comfortable bed, a new bathroom and framed devotional pictures for the walls. At the very last minute, devotees had rushed off to purchase a book case and elegant new silver eating ware. They were exhausted. As they attended to final details, Prabhupada's car pulled up at the front of the temple.

The air was chilly. It was the start of winter, and the ground was wet from recent rain. As Prabhupada stepped out of his car, he noticed a group of young devotees, some with long hair, playing guitars and singing the Hare Krsna mantra to a slow, melancholy melody.

Jita Girisa, a young brahmacari from the temple, started up his own kirtana, chanting Jaya Prabhupada, Jaya Prabhupada, bounding up and down like a puppy greeting its master. Prabhupada smiled at him -- he seemed to appreciate the young man's spontaneous enthusiasm. Prabhupada mounted a few steps and entered the front door. It was too late to have darsana of the Deities, so Prabhupada decided to go to his room straightaway. The devotees congregated in the foyer as Prabhupada slowly climbed the stairs. He paused on the landing, turned, and surveyed the kirtana for a few moments. As he smiled, the kirtana rose in crescendo, karatalas, gongs, heavy brass whompers and voices all merging in youthful exuberance. Prabhupada completed the climb, and as he entered his room he turned and gave the kirtana party a broad grin.

After receiving a short foot-bathing ceremony with warm water and rose petals, Prabhupada looked around at his newly-furnished room. Glancing at the corner, he frowned quizzically. There, piled up atop a cloth on the floor, lay a large stack of Srimad Bhagavatam and Caitanya Caritamrta volumes. He turned to Rama dasa. "What are these books doing on the floor?" he asked.

Rama dasa tried to explain. There was a bookcase, he said, but since it was only purchased that afternoon, and varnished a few hours before, it was still wet. Two devotees had, in fact, stayed back from the airport just to fan it dry, but to no avail.

"It doesn't matter, bring it in," Prabhupada insisted. The sticky bookcase was quickly carried in.

"Fill it," said Prabhupada. As Rama dasa reached for the books it suddenly struck him that the shelves were not far apart enough to fit them.

Rama dasa: I made a miserable attempt at an excuse. "The books won't go in, Srila Prabhupada." Prabhupada patiently repeated his instruction: "Put the books in the bookcase." I nervously picked the books up again and, laying them flat on the shelves, started to stack them one on top of the other. Prabhupada stopped me, "No," Srila Prabhupada said, "You should never lay the books down like that."

"But Srila Prabhupada," I pleaded, “I can't get the books to go in."

Srila Prabhupada came over next to me and took the books out of my hand. "This is how you do it," Srila Prabhupada said. He held one on its edge, the side opposite the spine, and slid it into the bookshelf that way -- spine up. It fitted. As I handed him each book, he placed them all into the bookshelf in the same manner. Then Srila Prabhupada said he would like something to eat.

The devotees had presumed -- mistakenly -- that Prabhupada would not be hungry after his late-night flight. Rama dasa quickly ran down the stairs to arrange the prasadam. As Prabhupada's bags were unpacked, the kirtana continued downstairs. Hare Rama, the young brahmacari who had played the guitar for Prabhupada's arrival, led the chanting with another mellow, sweet tune. After a while, Prabhupada asked that all the devotees be invited up.

In a few minutes the room was packed. Prabhupada sat behind his low desk. Beside him on a stand stood a flourishing tulasi plant in an ornate pot. Prabhupada spoke pleasantly for some time, emphasising the great value of the human form of life. Now, he stressed, having progressed beyond animal life, there was a need for further improvement to advance more and more to the point of meeting Krsna face to face.

Unfortunately, he pointed out, the leaders of society were actually misdirecting, because they did not instruct the general population how to do this. "These rascals, so-called leaders, gurus and others, they do not know what is the goal of life. Na te viduh. They do not know. Some imaginary theory, ‘I am God', ‘I am this', ‘I am that'. A common-sense: ‘If I am God, then why I am under the control of the material nature?' Eh? Another rascal came, saying that ‘I am God'. If you are God, so why you have become dog? They say it is lila." The devotees laughed.

"Just see. God has come to manifest his lila, by becoming a dog, and He is beaten. Whole day, night, He is hungry and He has come to your home to ask some food and you are beating. So, God is displaying this lila. Just see what foolish rascals they are. This is going on. So don't be misguided by such rascals."

Prabhupada quoted the famous song by Narottama dasa Thakura. Hari hari biphale janama gonainu: My dear Lord, I have simply wasted my time. Why? Now, manusya janama paiya, radha krsna na bhajiya, janiya suniya bisa khainu: I got this human form of life. It is meant for understanding Krsna, and Krsna's pastimes with Radharani, Radha-Krsna. So I do not care for that. That means knowingly I have drunk poison.

"My only request," Srila Prabhupada said, "is that the Krsna consciousness movement is the most scientific movement to save the human society from falling down again in the cycle of birth and death. It is a very scientific movement. The cycle of birth and death is going on. We are eternal. The people have been put into such deep darkness that they do not know what is the aim of life. Whimsically, everyone is manufacturing some nonsense. So fortunately you have got this Krsna consciousness, so utilise your life properly."

Prabhupada reminded the devotees that they had an immense stock of literature. "Read it, digest it, and make your life perfect." He looked around the room. "We have published this book, Nectar of Instruction." He held up the new book. "Have you seen?"

He noted the devotees' enthusiastic greeting. "I'm very glad to see you, you are so enthusiastic. And you should be enthusiastic. For enhancing devotional activities, one must be very enthusiastic. That is the first proposition. Don't be dull. Enthusiastic and patient. And niscayat. Niscayat means firmly convinced: ‘yes, surely I shall meet Krsna and go to Him, back to home, back to Godhead.' But you have to do the prescribed duties. Sato vrtteh. You must be very honest, and sadhu-sange, and in the association of the devotees. If we follow these six principles, then it is sure."

Prabhupada warned of six things that would spoil one's devotional life; eating too much or collecting too much was the first of these. "Of course, for our preaching we require, but we shall collect as much as we require, not that we keep money in the bank and spend for some other purposes. That kind of collection is dangerous."

The second, Srila Prabhupada said, was prayasa. "Prayasa means endeavouring too much for getting something. Our life should be very simple. We shall act so simply that we shall have time for Krsna consciousness. So we should not attempt anything which is very difficult to execute."

"So, prajalpa, unnecessary talking all nonsense, politics, rascaldom, speculation, this, that. No. Be grave. Don't talk nonsense and waste time."

He described the last three items. "Niyamagraha. Niyamagraha means to not accept the regulative principles, niyama agraha. Agraha means not to accept, and niyamagraha means simply ‘I am packed up with the regulative principles, but I do not see whether I am making progress'. So, laulyam, greediness and jana-sangah, to associate with non-devotees, unwanted persons. These six things should be avoided. And the first mentioned six things should be accepted. Then our progress is sure, without any failure." Prabhupada concluded his informal arrival talk by encouraging his disciples to read the new book, Nectar of Instruction. "Everything is there," Srila Prabhupada said.

Prabhupada sat back on his bolster cushion and spoke appreciatively about New Zealand. "It has everything, lots of cows and grass -- all the natural things that are necessary for Krsna consciousness. You are lucky to be living in such a nice country. So you are all very fortunate. I just request one thing from you." Prabhupada looked around the room in earnest, giving an admonitory message: "You please don't concoct anything."

Rama dasa squeezed through the crowd, balancing a silver plate of puris and a succulent vegetable preparation. Prabhupada, appearing completely at ease, unselfconsciously began to eat.

Jita Girisa: Prabhupada was completely relaxed and transcendental. He gracefully took pieces of puri, and, wrapping subji in them, threw them into his mouth. I was incredulous. I had never seen anyone eat like that before. Such perfect poise! He never once touched his mouth with his hands. He slightly tilted his head back and delicately dropped morsels into his mouth.

It was so graceful and aristocratic. It was like watching a king or a demigod eat. The amazing thing was that this appeared to him to be the most natural thing to do, to eat completely quietly, without feeling the least bit discomfort or distraction, despite the fact that there were over 75 devotees watching every move that he made.

Prabhupada turned to Rama dasa. "This is very nice. Are the peas fresh?" Rama dasa, embarrassed, explained that they were frozen. Prabhupada gave Rama dasa an intense look. "Frozen peas should never be offered to Krsna."

He turned to Tusta Krsna Swami and asked if he grew peas on his farm. Tusta Krsna confirmed that he did. Prabhupada requested him to supply fresh vegetables to the temple every day so that they could be offered to the Deities.

Srila Prabhupada picked up a glass goblet, tipped his head back, and held the glass up very high, allowing a silver stream of water to pour directly into his mouth.

Jita Girisa: This was the first time I had seen anyone drink water like this. It was perfect. Sometimes when you see an actor, they've rehearsed a role so many times that they force themselves to make it look as natural as possible. They don't make any mistake, because it's so well-rehearsed. But Prabhupada's natural movements were much deeper than that... They were just completely natural and graceful. We were all astounded to see them.

Prabhupada ate a little piece of sandesa and started distributing the rest of his prasadam to the devotees. Someone from the North Shore had brought a large jar of home-made juicy rasagullas. Prabhupada asked Hari-sauri to distribute the sweets until everyone in the room had one. Finally, Prabhupada turned to Hari-sauri. Kindly and thoughtful as ever, he asked, "So, did you get?" Hari-sauri said that he didn't. Prabhupada smiled lovingly. "So, you also take."

Srila Prabhupada Passtimes-33-Spiritual anxiety and Material anxiety

Monday, 26th April 1976

Ever since first crawling up the steps of the vyasasana in 1973, young Janaka had shown a spontaneous desire to be with Srila Prabhupada. Prabhupada had, in turn, reciprocated by showing him much encouragement and affection. Janaka and his parents had recently moved from Brighton to the house next door to the temple. Now Janaka was fortunate to continue his intimate association. He took every opportunity to visit Srila Prabhupada in his rooms, and was so young and guileless that Prabhupada allowed him "free rein".

Sometimes Janaka would climb in and out of Srila Prabhupada's bedroom window via the veranda to avoid confronting the servants who stood guard at the darsana room door. It was not unusual to see him attempting to play on Prabhupada's harmonium, or to find him curled up asleep on the carpet in the bedroom while Prabhupada rested. Occasionally, Prabhupada would teach him songs, or share his prasadam with him. Janaka sometimes spread his colouring-in books and crayons on Prabhupada's darsana room floor. Once he was even discovered in Prabhupada's bathroom, plying his toy boats in the bathing buckets.

Janaka accompanied Srila Prabhupada and his entourage for the last morning walk at the Botanic Gardens. The day's schedule had been adjusted to allow for Prabhupada's departure to Auckland after an early massage and lunch. Hence the sun had not yet risen when the maroon limousine pulled up under a large fig tree adjoining a main entrance to the park. The pre-dawn air was chilly, and Prabhupada alighted looking snug and warm in his woolly saffron coat.

The walk began along the boundary road of the gardens. Cittahari asked Srila Prabhupada, "Is a devotee always in anxiety when he sees others unhappy?"

"Yes," Prabhupada replied. "How to deliver them? This is Krsna anxiety. This kind of anxiety is welcome."

Cittahari asked whether there was such anxiety in the spiritual world.

"Yes. In the spiritual world there is everything. But the central point is Krsna. Here, the anxiety is ‘Where I shall get money? Where I shall get woman?' And there, the anxiety is ‘how shall I get Krsna?' The anxiety is there, but the quality is different."

Cittahari inquired further. "If we're in anxiety that we cannot perform devotional service nicely, is that all right?"

Prabhupada explained that that was indeed spiritual; but the full manifestation of such "Krsna anxiety" was rarely achieved. It was available only when one came to the platform of first-class devotional service. "Then he is perfect. Janma-koti-sukrtair na labhyate. After many millions of lives of pious activities one can get such anxiety."

"What if one keeps falling down from following the regulative principles, and feels anxiety?" Cittahari wondered. "Is that anxiety material?"

"Yes."

"It's not spiritual?"

Pusta Krsna wanted the issue clarified. "So anxiety for oneself is maya?"

"That is material," replied Prabhupada.

"And anxiety for Krsna ..."

"That is spiritual."

"Krsna anxiety" was so desirable, Prabhupada added, that Rupa Goswami had advised that one purchase it "at any price". But that price was a high one. Prabhupada disclosed the subtle point with a smile. Ironically, Srila Prabhupada said the price for obtaining Krsna anxiety was one's anxiety to have it; and that anxiety was not available even after millions of lives of pious activities.

Cittahari inquired on behalf of the pujaris present. "So if we are performing Deity worship, and we get in anxiety how to make it nice ..."

Prabhupada confirmed Cittahari's thoughts. "Yes, that is Krsna anxiety. If you become anxious how to worship the Deity, how to dress Krsna nicely, if you remain, that will develop your anxiety for Krsna. Therefore Deity worship is essential. Exactly in time to get up, to offer mangala arati, to dress; this anxiety is the beginning of Krsna anxiety. Then when you become perfect, you will always be anxious for Krsna. That is the perfectional stage. Therefore by the injunction of the sastra, regulative principles, it is a way of creating that anxiety. So we must follow. Then we'll come to the real anxiety."

Another devotee asked about the anxiety to distribute a lot of books. Was that spiritual?

"If you become very anxious how to sell more books," Srila Prabhupada said, "that is Krsna anxiety. That is not trade anxiety; that is Krsna anxiety."

Guru Krpa brought up a topical managerial issue. "Some people say that "When I go on sankirtana to sell books, I become in too much anxiety if I'm not doing well, so I'd rather not do it."

"No, that is Krsna anxiety. He does not know. Let him know that that is Krsna anxiety."

Prabhupada gave the example of Mother Yasoda. "She became the mother of Krsna so that she would always remain in anxiety for Krsna, whether Krsna is safe. That is mother's anxiety."

Prabhupada's face became animated as he appeared to take on the persona of Mother Yasoda. "Mother Yasoda is always anxious. ‘Krsna is crawling. Whether He is falling down in some water or some monkey has come, hurting him, or ...?' Always. Or ‘He is touching some fire'. Always anxiety. And besides that, ‘The demons are coming'. So this is perfection. Always remain in anxiety for Krsna."

The sublime, Krsna conscious anxiety of Mother Yasoda, Prabhupada explained, was unknown in the material world. "Here, everyone takes Krsna as the father. Father means I'm anxiety-less: ‘Father, you supply my wants.' And to become father of Krsna means to purchase anxiety for Krsna. This philosophy they do not know."

The party entered deep into the gardens. As they reached a steep incline, Prabhupada grasped Janaka's hand with his, and, much to the boy's pleasure put it inside the pocket of his own warm woollen coat.

Prabhupada stopped alongside a huge cactus with large jagged blades that came out from a central hard core and hung downwards, treacherously close to the path. Each of the stiff blades was bordered with hard, needle-sharp spikes. Prabhupada smiled. The messengers of Yamaraja, Srila Prabhupada said, dragged sinful living beings through plants such as these.

"That is anxiety, Srila Prabhupada!" said Cittahari. "That is anxiety -- when one goes to Yamaraja and has to face."

Prabhupada grinned. "Yes. That is the result of material anxiety."

Srila Prabhupada summed up the morning's theme: Ultimately, he explained, it was not possible to become anxiety-less. The impersonalists who search after santi, peace, may try to become free from anxiety for some time, he said, but ultimately they would fall down.

"You are a living being. You cannot be anxiety-less. That means you are dead. That is not the ideal. Anxiety should be purified from material contamination, and it should be only for Krsna. Then it is perfect."

Radhanath Swami explains Misery is the Mercy of the Lord

Srila Prabhupada explained to us our position. One time a devotee approached and he said, Guru Maharaj, Srila Prabhupada- ‘I am the most fallen’. And Prabhupada said –‘You are not the most anything! You are simply insignificant!’ This is very, very powerful preacher, leader of our society. ‘You are simply insignificant’. That is our eternal, constitutional position. The more we realize the Sun, the more the ray of light realizes it is insignificant. Not only it’s insignificance but also that whatever light it has, is depending not on ourselves but on a source, the Sun. In the same way, the living entity forgetting Krsna, thinks-‘I am the enjoyer’. But unfortunately trying to enjoy material life, there is so much problems, so much misery and suffering. And Krsna has designed that way out of his mercy. “Misery is the mercy of the Lord”. We may not like misery; we must understand how it is needed, it is require, to reform us, to purify us to make us detached from all of the addictions of we have there are keeping us away from Krsna.

YOU ARE SAYING 'I LOVE KRSNA', BUT YOU ARE NOT !!!

So if you actually love Krsna, then why are you not showing it to Krsna? If you tell your wife, “I love you. I have everything for you.” But then you go out with another woman and spend your money on her, then will your wife be very happy?

You are saying “I love Krsna, everything for Krsna,” but then you are spending all your money, all your time, all your affection simply on Maya and you are saying, “No, no; it is only Krsna.”

You do that with your wife and see how your family life goes! So you are doing this with Krsna, and you are thinking... This is simply word jugglery. This may satisfy your mind, but it won’t satisfy your heart. Neither it is going to fool Krsna. He knows that all right, you are giving lip service, but factually, what you are doing to show that you love Krsna?

HH JAYAPATAKA SWAMI

Srila Prabhupada passtimes-32-Thou shall not kill

After lunch, Srila Prabhupada met with two young men from the Mormon Church. They were respectful and seemed to appreciate the disciplined life of Krsna consciousness.

"What do you feel is the greatest order of God?" asked one.

"To surrender to Him," replied Srila Prabhupada.

The conversation was long and amicable, although Prabhupada did not compromise his stance, particularly on meat-eating. "Christ says: ‘Thou shall not kill'," he said. "They are maintaining thousands of killing houses, and still they are passing as Christians."

Guest: Well, they're wrong.

Prabhupada: That is the point.

Guest: I agree with you.

Prabhupada: So you should tell them.

Guest: Well, we are. That's what we're here for.

Prabhupada concurred. "Yes. Tell them: ‘You are not Christian. Don't call yourself as Christian. You are persistently disobeying.' Christ said: ‘Thou shall not kill' and the Christians began by killing Christ, crucifying Christ. And that is going on still, in large scale, and they are still Christian. The Pope is eating meat and ... I do not wish to say so many things. These things are going on, and still, they are Christians. What can I say?"

One of the elders asked Srila Prabhupada, "Would the cutting down of a plant be equated with killing an animal?" Prabhupada explained: "Our philosophy is that we cannot stop killing, but there is no unnecessary killing."

Tusta Krsna Swami added that he had read something in the Mormon scriptures where God had spoken, requesting his followers not to eat meat except in times of famine and starvation. The Mormons agreed, but Tusta Krsna stuck to his point. "But slaughterhouses don't do that. They [Mormons] still eat meat."

"The point," Prabhupada explained, "is that every living being has to eat another living being. Jivo jivasya jivanam. That we admit. But ‘discrimination is the best part of valour'. You have to eat something, but if you have got grains, vegetables, milk -- very nice preparations -- why should you kill cow?"

"Well," said one of the Mormons, "we believe that the Lord ordained that food for man, and that He even said in the scripture to the prophet..."

Prabhupada: So he said? He ordained cow for your food?

Mormon: He ordained meat. Yes.

Tusta Krsna: But only in times of starvation and famine. That is the word of wisdom in the Mormon scripture.

Mormon: Well I don't want to get in contentions about it, but the scripture also says that ‘who abstains from meat is not ordained of God'. So you can take it whatever way you want.

Prabhupada returned to his original point. "The commandment, it is clearly said: ‘Thou shall not kill'. So what does it mean? That unless there is absolute necessity, we shall not kill."

The Mormon was trying hard to keep the conversation cordial. "I think that's right, and I feel that way."

Prabhupada explained some of the practical benefits of cow protection. "So when in any civilised country there is ample food for human beings, why they should kill? You can utilise cows in a different way. Just like we are maintaining a farm -- not one, many. We are maintaining cows and we are getting enough milk. And from milk we can produce varieties of palatable, nutritious food. And that is very, very enjoyable. So let the animal live and take the milk. None of us take meat, but we are not dying. We are having so many nice preparations from milk, from grains, from fruit."

Prabhupada explained the higher principles of spiritual vegetarianism: "Besides that, our other principle is that we offer to God. So God says ‘give me vegetables, milk,' like that. Patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati. So we offer these things, and we take the leftover. That is our principle. We are not after killing or not killing. We are simply after obeying the orders of Krsna."

"Krsna says, ‘Give Me food from the vegetables'. So we offer Him very nice, palatable dishes and eat. This is our principle. So even while eating, we remember God: ‘Krsna has so nicely eaten this. Let me take the remnants.' So if God said that ‘You remember Me always', we can do it."

Remembering Krsna, Prabhupada detailed, was both practical and easy: "He has explained how to remember Him. He said, raso 'ham apsu kaunteya: ‘I am the taste of the water'. Who is not drinking water? At least three times, four times we drink water, everyone. So when you drink, and the water quenches your thirst, and you feel some nice taste, Krsna says, God says, ‘I am that taste'. So where is my difficulty to remember God? If you simply remember this formula, that ‘The taste of the water is Krsna', immediately you will remember Krsna.

"Prabhasmi sasi-suryayoh. ‘I am the shining of the sun, shining of the moon'. So who does not see the shining of the sun and the moon? At night you see the shining of the moon, and by day you see the sun. So where is the chance of forgetting God? There is no chance at all. As soon as you see the sunshine even, ‘Oh, here is Krsna'. As soon as you see the moonshine, ‘Oh, here is Krsna'. So in this way there is a list that you cannot avoid the chance for remembering Krsna. Every moment, every time, you can remember Him. Krsna says, ‘You always think of Me'. So where is my difficulty to think of Him. Unless I purposefully do not do it. It is not that when I go to the church and temple I can remember. I can remember Him twenty-four hours. That is Krsna consciousness."

The Mormon was in agreement. "I think that's right, and I think that many people I know personally are, what you say, Krsna conscious. They think of God and Christ twenty-four hours a day, too."

"Yes," Srila Prabhupada said. "That is wanted. We obey the orders of Christ -- we think of always -- then we are perfect. Either Christ, the son of God, or God, Krsna, the same thing. God and son of God, they are not different."

The discussion and atmosphere remained pleasant. At the conclusion of the session, the two young men gave Srila Prabhupada their Book of Mormon, and he sold them each a signed copy of the Sri Isopanisad.

Srila Prabhupada passtimes-31-Defeating the Mayavad philosophy

A new guest entered the room and Sabhapati introduced him: Professor Ian Watson, senior lecturer in Indian Philosophy at La Trobe University.

In sharp contrast to the courteous and gentle behaviour of the Rama bhaktas, long-haired and bearded Professor Watson was challenging and unsubmissive. On Prabhupada's request the professor described the details of the subjects that he taught. One section of the course, he said, was Eastern Religion and Philosophy, which he described, dealt with "things central to the understanding of Hinduism, such as karma, samsara, dharma and ultimately moksa".

Srila Prabhupada explained to the professor that Caitanya Mahaprabhu's philosophy was above moksa, liberation. "Above this, the ultimate goal is prema, love of God." Prabhupada asked Professor Watson what he thought was the platform after moksa. The professor was immediately at odds.

Professor: There is no position after moksa.

Prabhupada: There is no? Jivatma is finished after moksa?

Professor: Yes.

Prabhupada: Jivatma is eternal. Do you accept or not?

Professor: It depends on what you mean by jivatma.

It was obvious that the Professor was a staunch proponent of Mayavadi philosophy, the very same insidious and misleading doctrine that he had warned the submissive Rama bhakta about only minutes before. Prabhupada briefly explained that according to Vedic literature there was God, the Paramatma and the individual soul, the jivatma. In response, the professor claimed that according to Hinduism the jivatma was equal to the Paramatma.

Prabhupada countered that they were equal in quality, but not in quantity. Since the word param, superior, was used, he said, there was no question of equality.

The professor was obdurate. "Jivatma and Paramatma are one."

"If they are one," Prabhupada asked the professor, "why is the jivatma under the control of maya?"

"We've forgotten," he replied.

"If you've forgotten, that means you're defective. If the jivatma equals the Paramatma, why should he have defective understanding? That means that he is not perfect. That means he is not Paramatma. Jivatma means sometimes in illusion, but the Paramatma is never in illusion. This is our Vaisnava philosophy."

"All right," said Professor Watson, "you could put it that way. But what was the jivatma before it became illusioned?"

"There was no ‘before' or ‘after'," explained Prabhupada. "The jiva is eternal."

Prabhupada compared the jiva souls to small sparks, whereas Paramatma was a big fire. Although the sparks have a tendency to become extinguished, the fire doesn't. Professor Watson was painfully frank. "That analogy sounds suspect to me."

"Why?" Prabhupada rejoined. "Analogy means similar points. When the points are sound, then analogy." Prabhupada described the analogy in more detail, but the professor was not in agreement.

"But you seem to be suggesting that each one of us are a little bit of God somehow."

"Yes," Srila Prabhupada said. "You can say ‘small God'."

"Is that illusion?"

"No. We have all got a little bit of power. Just like you have creative power. You can manufacture a 747. God can manufacture millions of stars and planets. You are a sample God."

It was clear that the professor took Prabhupada's humble presentation of the Vedic conclusions as a threat to his own ideas; his thinly-disguised envy and antagonism became all the more evident as the conversation progressed.

Professor: Do you think that no other movement is correct?

Prabhupada: Well, Krsna is the highest authority.

Professor: Do you think that your way is the only way?

Prabhupada: It is Krsna's way.

Professor: All right, but do you think that it is the only way?

Prabhupada: Yes. But whether you accept or not, that is your business.

Professor: What about Buddhist philosophy?

Prabhupada: What Buddha says, Krsna has already said. Buddha says ahimsa. Krsna says amanitvam adambitvam ahimsa ... Whatever others say, that has already been said by Krsna.

Professor: But of course not everyone would agree with that. There are many movements in the Indian circle...

Prabhupada: There may be many movements, but we do not care for that. We say ‘Krsna is the Supreme, you are subordinate, you surrender unto Him, you'll be happy'. That's all.

The professor was getting more and more agitated.

Professor: This is what I mean. Your movement is an exclusivist one.

Prabhupada: We may be fools, that is another thing. But whatever Krsna says, we take it as ultimate truth.

Professor: That's because Krsna is a spokesman for the Brahman.

Prabhupada: No! Brahmano hi pratisthaham. Brahman is dependent on Krsna. Krsna is not dependent on Brahman.

Professor: That depends on how you interpret that particular sloka, and how you translate it. As you know yourself, there are many different translations of the Gita.

Prabhupada: There may be different, but we don't accept them. Therefore we are presenting Bhagavad Gita As It Is.

The professor was determined to argue at all costs. "What about other Deities?"

Prabhupada: They are servants of Krsna.

Professor: That sounds extraordinary to me.

Prabhupada: It is supported by all the acaryas.

Professor: But they don't support it in the sense that you're suggesting, namely that Krsna is the origin of all, above all ...

Prabhupada: We have got so many evidences, so we accept it.

The professor was at boiling point. "What you are saying is just not true. It is false."

Prabhupada raised his voice. "Don't say like that! We are not rascals! We are following the acaryas."

"Sankara doesn't say like that."

"Yes he does! You read his commentary on Bhagavad Gita. You see."

It had become too much for Guru Krpa Swami who spoke up, not able to tolerate the aggressive professor any longer. "What is your authority to sit here and insult our spiritual master? Our spiritual master has written 80 books. How many have you produced? Where are your disciples?"

The professor, face reddening, vented his anger at Guru Krpa Swami. "This is the trouble with your movement. It breeds people like you -- fanatics."

Prabhupada did not appreciate the man's criticism of his disciples, and responded by practically shouting.

"You are fanatic or he is fanatic? Who will judge? I say you are fanatic. How you can say fanatic? Ramanujacarya is fanatic? Sankaracarya is fanatic? Madhvacarya is fanatic?"

Guru Krpa, totally exasperated with the way the meeting had proceeded, gave Professor Watson a last warning: if he made any more disparaging remarks, he would have to leave. It was obvious that the situation had become all too delicate. Prabhupada deftly turned the conversation around, away from philosophy. After a few minutes, the mood of the discussion became light-hearted. Professor Watson calmed down, dropped his defensiveness and developed a friendlier demeanour. After the meeting, the professor took prasadam with the devotees. Finally, fully relaxed, he apologised for any misunderstandings and left.

Srila Prabhupada passtimes-20-Prabhupada's humility and compassion were unparalleled

Memory of the Day

Dina Bandhu : When I went to the Los Angeles temple for training, the first devotee I met there was Mahapurush, who immediately began to tell me a story about 26 Second Avenue. Mahapurush used to go to 26 Second Avenue and take prasadam. He said that every day, everybody would sit in Swamiji's apartment, and Swamiji would serve rice, dahl, chapatis, and subji to everyone.

Then one day Mahapurush stayed a little late. Everybody else had left. There were only two people in the room: Prabhupada and himself. And there were many dirty pots. Mahapurush began to think, "Well, somehow these dirty pots get cleaned every day. I don't see anybody else around and there's only one other person in this room, and I'm usually not here. So there's only one person who could be doing this. It's not proper for him to do it." Thinking in that way, Mahapurush began picking up the pots. At that moment Prabhupada smiled and said, "I was just praying to Krishna to please send someone to help me."

Srila Prabhupada could have stayed in any Gaudiya Matha temple, as they all loved him. Prabhupada's godbrothers knew that Abhay Babu sang sweet kirtanas, lectured wonderfully, and wrote wonderful articles. If you go to the Gaudiya Mathas you can see old sannyasis there living comfortably, as Prabhupada could have lived. He wouldn't have had to do anything, what to speak of wash a pot. He could have lived a very comfortable life in Vrindavana.

Instead, here he was washing pots for hippies. We were the most degraded class of persons, yet Prabhupada was cooking and cleaning up after people like us. Prabhupada's humility and compassion were unparalleled. There's no one like Prabhupada, and there will never be anyone like Prabhupada.

Deity Pastimes:3-Sri Ranganatha Himself Delivering Prasadam to Devotee

We hear a lot about Healthy Meal Scheme for under-privileged children in schools; they are also called as Mid-day Meals for school children. But a few centuries ago, the Vaishnavite Saint, Sri Ramanuja devised a marvelous scheme for under nourished children! The story goes like this:

In the famous Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple in Srirangam, Tamil Nadu, a long line of devotees would patiently wait for the delicious Prasadam, even a few centuries ago. A poor Vaishnavite used to be the first one in the line and was notorious for demanding prasadam not only for himself, but for his entire family consisting of sixteen children! Everyday he would fight with the temple authorities for a huge amount of Prasadam, even as the devotees standing behind him had to make do with a tiny quantity. Exasperated, the authorities resorted to pushing him out of the temple. He would wail, “ My sixteen children would starve if they do not get this Prasadam, please have pity on me!”. One day, he decided to bring all his malnourished children to stand in the line. As usual, the fight with the temple authorities started on that day also. Sri Ramanuja, who happened to be at the temple at that time, asked the authorities what the commotion was all about. They told him about the demands of the Vaishnavite and said that they would not mind giving him extra Prasadam if only he was willing to do some service to the temple.

Turning to the Vaishnavite, Sri Ramanuja asked him what was preventing him from rendering some service to the temple. He replied, “ Swamy! Look at my children ! They are under nourished and sick most of the times. All my time is spent in taking care of them. Moreover, unfortunately, I have not studied the Vedas or the Divya Prabandhams ( hymns by the Azhwars) and so cannot join in the temple Parayanam. What all I know is a part of Vishnu- sahasranamam only! What can I do ? “

Sri Ramanuja then asked him to recite the Vishnu Sahasranamam to the extent that he knew it. The Vaishnavite hesitated and then began the recitation. “ Vishvam Vishnu Vashatkaro Bhuta Bhavya Bhavat -prabhuh ; Bhutakrit Bhutabhrut..” That was all he knew in Vishnu-sahasranamam! Only upto the sixth name! The poor Vaishnavite was overcome by self pity and exclaimed, “ That is the only part I know, Swamy!” Sri Ramanuja looked at him reflectively and said, “ You recited the sixth name, Bhutabrut. Now onwards you must go on doing the Japam of the sixth name, in this manner: Bhutabhrute namah. If you do this, you don’t have to seek food; food will come to you, to your place! Will you do it?” The Vaishnavite eagerly nodded.

From that day onwards, he was not to be seen in the temple. All the commotion during the prasadam distribution time stopped altogether. A few days later, when Sri Ramanuja went to the temple, the temple authorities came to him. They had a different story to tell now. They said, “ Swamy! A strange thing is being observed nowadays in the temple. Though a substantial quantity of Prasadam is offered to Sri Ranganatha as usual, when we take up the distribution it is found that a considerable amount is missing! This has started happening after you told the fighting Vaishnavite to stop coming to the temple. Our security is tight but still this is happening. We feel that the Vaishnavite maybe responsible. Somehow he is managing to steal the Prasadam!” Sri Ramanuja was stunned to hear this. He asked them whether they knew where he stayed. They said, “ That is again strange! He has moved out of his house.” Sri Ramanuja asked them to search for the Vaishnavite and bring him, as he would like to see him. All their efforts were in vain to locate that person.

A few weeks later, Sri Ramanuja had to cross the Kollidam river that surrounds Srirangam, for an event in a nearby village. Suddenly he saw a person running after him, calling out, “ Swamy! Swamy!”. It was none other than the Vaishnavite who stopped coming to the Srirangam temple for Prasadam. He fell at the feet of Sri Ramanuja, weeping profusely. When he managed to talk, he said, “ Swamy! By your Grace, that boy is delivering the prasadam, both times everyday! All my children are no more sick or under -nourished. I have moved out of the place near the temple so as not to get into problem with the temple authorities. I am eternally grateful to you. I am also doing the japam, ‘Bhutabhrute namah’, constantly.” Sri Ramanuja was overwhelmed. “ Which boy? What did he say his name was?” asked Sri Ramanuja. The Vaishnavite replied that the boy introduced himself as The Servant of Sri Ramanuja!

Sri Ramanuja realised now what was going on. Sri Ranganatha Himself was delivering the food to the Vaishnavite, everyday, both in the morning and in the night! The Divine Name ‘ Bhutabhrut’ means One Who Nourishes the entire Universe!

Srila Prabhupada passtimes-27-Take it very seriously. It is a great opportunity

Friday, 23rd April 1976

The early morning was set aside for a ceremony in the temple. About a dozen young men and women were to receive initiation into the chanting of the Hare Krsna maha-mantra. A few others would receive their gayatri mantra, enabling them to become brahmanas and worship the temple Deities. Prabhupada spoke on the significance of initiation.

Srila Prabhupada said:

"In the Caitanya Caritamrta, while teaching Srila Rupa Goswami, Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, ei rupe brahmanda brahmite kona bhagyavan jiva, guru krsna krpaya paya bhakti lata bija. The living entities are transmigrating from one form of life to another, and wandering from one planet to another, sometimes low-grade life, sometimes high-grade life. This is going on. This is called samsara cakra vartmani."

Prabhupada stressed that initiation should not be taken leniently. "Take it very seriously. It is a great opportunity. Whatever you have promised before the Lord, before your spiritual master, before the fire, before Vaisnavas, never deviate from this promise. Then you will keep fixed up in your spiritual life, no illicit sex, no meat-eating, no gambling, no intoxication. These four ‘no's' and chanting Hare Krsna -- one ‘yes'. Four ‘no's' and one ‘yes'. That will make your life successful."

The word bija, Prabhupada explained, meant seed. The seed of devotion, bhakti lata bija, was planted by the mercy of guru and Krsna. "So when you get a nice seed, you have to sow it within the earth. The example is, just like if you get a very nice seed of a first-class rose flower, so you sow it on the ground and just offer little, little water. It will grow. So this seed can be grown by watering. What is that watering? Sravana kirtana jale karaye secana. This watering of the seed, bhakti-lata, is sravana kirtana, hearing and chanting."

The process, Prabhupada stressed, was easy. "It is not difficult. But maya is very strong, and sometimes deviates us. So when there is endeavour by maya to deviate us, just pray to Krsna, ‘Please save me. I am surrendered, fully surrendered, and kindly give me protection'. And Krsna will give you protection. But don't miss this opportunity. That is my request. I have all my good wishes and blessings upon you. So let us take the opportunity of bhakti, bhakti lata bija."

Srila Prabhupada passtimes-30- "ISKCON-The brainwash movement"

A notable feature of the 1976 Ratha-yatra parade was the presence of angry demonstrators. This type of animosity, of course, was not a new thing; angry Christians had tried to disrupt the Melbourne Ratha parade in 1974. Yet the latest opposition was far more organised and vehement. This time angry Christians were joined by a band of disgruntled parents. This particular group, calling themselves The Anti-Krishna Movement, followed the procession carrying banners announcing that the movement had "brainwashed" their children.

Although a newly-arrived phenomenon in Australia, the same type of hostilities had been on the increase elsewhere since 1975, especially in America and Europe. Claiming that their children had been kidnapped and indoctrinated against their will to practise the tenets of Krsna consciousness, some parents had resorted to brutal and severe means to reclaim their children.

One such violent method was "deprogramming" -- popularised by self-styled saviour Ted Patrick. Deprogramming involved hiring professional kidnappers to remove the devotees from the temple, and subjecting the victims to various severe techniques to "snap" them out of their so-called brainwashed condition. Such acts, of course, were illegal. Patrick was regularly convicted, spending more time in jail than out. Nevertheless, to some angry and ill-informed parents, deprogramming was becoming a viable option.

Many devotees became alarmed and uneasy by these disturbing trends, but Srila Prabhupada assured them that this was to be expected. Far from being a cause for apprehension, Prabhupada explained, growing opposition was a sign of ISKCON's authority. Antagonism between the demons and devotees, Srila Prabhupada said, had been going on since "time immemorial", but was especially prominent in Kali-yuga.

Prabhupada wrote in his Srimad Bhagavatam purports:

Devotees want to teach Krsna consciousness so that people will be satisfied with plain living and Krsna conscious advancement ...

Demons, on the other hand, are very much interested in advancing a plan by which people will labour hard like cats, hogs and dogs. Not understanding Krsna, such demons regard Krsna conscious life as "brainwashing" and "mind control". Thus, the demons attempt to impede the advancement of the Krsna consciousness movement.

Prabhupada assured the devotees that Krsna would protect them, and that ultimately the outcome would be in their favour.

As he explained in a morning class in Vrndavana: "Our movement is being checked in the Western countries that ‘This is a brainwash movement'. Brainwash -- that we are injecting some ideas by psychology, mental control, and our people they are taking to it and it is spreading like an epidemic. How to check it? Therefore they are now taking action how to stop this Hare Krsna movement in Europe and America. They are trying. Of course, we are not afraid of this attempt. They will never be successful, rest assured, because we are pushing on Krsna consciousness.

"Krsna was attempted to be killed from the very beginning of His life. So many attempts were made by the demons and the raksasas to kill Him, but actually Krsna killed them all. So if you are sincere, if you follow the principles and push on this Krsna consciousness movement, nobody can kill you. You'll go forward, rest assured. We are not going to be killed. They are perceiving that this movement is spreading like an epidemic, and the young men of Europe and America are taking it seriously. This movement is not going to stop. It will go on. Krsna cannot be killed, neither His movement can be killed. Rather, those who are attempting to kill, they will be killed. But we must be very serious and sincere."

* * *

Prabhupada's health was declining, yet he did not hesitate in chalking out more plans to visit all his centres. He had already endured much austerity to carry the message of Krsna throughout the world. Internally, Prabhupada was always meditating on the order of his spiritual master, and therefore he was not disturbed. Thus he felt impelled to travel. By the end of the Mayapur festival of March 1976, Prabhupada's immediate travel plans were finalised. After leaving India, Prabhupada would set off eastward on another world tour. After a week-long visit to Melbourne, he would visit Auckland, Fiji, Hawaii, Los Angeles, Detroit, Toronto, New Vrndavana, Washington D.C., London, Paris and Tehran. The four-month tour would end in Bombay during August.
